Bible Study Review: Romans 11:22-33

Taught by Pastor Pam Bowers-Smith

The Jews and Gentiles will become one sheepfold of Jesus. Note that Christ has already completed the work of salvation for all of us. We just have to hear, believe and receive. The Jews are thinking they’re good with God but they’re on the opposite side of the fence not being in line with righteousness. Although the Jews are not lining up it doesn’t change what God has said.

Hebrews 8:10..”For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God and they shall be to me a people.” This is God’s commitment to a people who want nothing to do with Him. This speaks to the faithfulness of God. What we do does not change God’s character. Because of God’s commitment to Abraham, they will be beloved forever, “ because of the fathers’ sake”, talking about their forefathers. The call of them being the elect cannot be taken back because of the promise to their forefathers. God’s dealings with Lot because of His commitment to Abraham (a man who made mistakes, erred) is a great example that echoes God honors relationship, not perfection. Judgement or punishment without mercy will never bring about reconciliation. We don’t trust what mercy does. But mercy is always a Godsend.

We see the sovereignty of God at work with reference to Israel and grace with reference to the Gentiles. All this is being accomplished thru the wisdom and knowledge and past finding out ways of God. Only God can orchestrate something like that, cause all things to work together. So He loves the Gentiles, us as wild as we were..the Jews as entitled as they were.. He’s not looking for perfection but right relationship. At one time the Gentiles were in unbelief…now the Jews. So in the sight of God, we all are on the same playing field. All of us were in disobedience at one time or another.

In verse 33 Paul is speaking of the wealth of wisdom, the abundance of the it, the value of the wisdom and the knowledge of God; the profoundness of it; the mysteries of it. Wisdom is defined as broad and full intelligence; skilled in the management of affairs. Wisdom speaks to the comprehension and power of reasoning that God operates in, both wisdom and knowledge working together. He’s always operating in a wealth of wisdom that we can’t begin to wrap our minds around. God always gets it, no matter what the it is. Just because you can’t figure out what He’s doing doesn’t mean He doesn’t know what HE’s doing. We are told to tell Him our particulars…truth is we have no idea what we are asking for. All God is trying to do in the midst of our craziness is show us mercy. “This is my mercy I’m not going to do that, not going to give you that, not going to let that happen, because I get it. I know where this is going to take you.” We still don’t recognize a wolf in sheep clothing. When God says no, remember verse 33 “oh the depth of wisdom and the knowledge of God”. That part!. He knows what He’s doing. Still up to good in the lives of His people, all his people.. He’s faithful and always has our best interest at heart. He is always looking at us through the eyes of mercy.
